Vision Screening Starts at 75
New Mexico requires vision screening at every renewal starting at age 75. The test happens at the MVD office during your in-person renewal visit. You cannot renew online or by mail once you reach 75, even if your previous renewal was conducted online.
The vision standard is 20/40 in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them to the appointment. Drivers who do not meet the standard receive a referral to an eye care professional and must submit a Vision Examination Certificate completed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist before the license issues.
The MVD does not send advance notice that vision screening now applies to your renewal. The requirement triggers at 75 regardless of when your last test occurred. If you renewed at 74 with no vision test and your four-year cycle runs to 78, your next renewal at 78 will require the screening.
Online and mail renewal stop working at 75. The MVD system blocks remote renewal for all drivers 75 and older, forcing an in-person visit even when no other flag exists on your record.
What to Bring to Your In-Person Renewal
Bring your current New Mexico driver's license, proof of Social Security number, and two documents proving New Mexico residency. Acceptable residency documents include a utility bill, bank statement, mortgage statement, or lease agreement dated within 90 days. A P.O. box does not qualify as proof of residency; the address must be a physical New Mexico street address.
If your license displays your legal name and you have not changed it since your last renewal, no additional name documentation is required. If your name changed due to marriage, divorce, or court order, bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the change. New Mexico does not accept a Social Security card as proof of a name change.

A standard New Mexico license no longer works for air travel.
Upgrading to REAL ID at renewal requires additional documentation: an original or certified copy of your birth certificate or valid U.S. passport, your Social Security card or a W-2 showing your full Social Security number, and two proofs of New Mexico residency. If your birth certificate shows a name different from your current legal name, bring documentation of every name change in sequence.
