When Your Premium Stays High After Completing the Course
You took the defensive driving course your neighbor recommended, submitted the completion certificate to your insurance agent, and waited for the discount to appear at renewal. The renewal notice arrived showing the same premium you paid last year. You call the carrier and learn the course provider was not on Florida's approved list, or the discount was never coded into your policy, or the certificate expired before renewal and no one told you.
This is the most common failure mode for Florida's mature-driver discount. The law requires insurers to offer it, but the statute does not fix the percentage, does not require automatic application, and does not mandate that carriers notify you when the certificate lapses. The discount exists, but the pathway to actually receiving it is procedural, not automatic.

Florida Statutes §627.0652 requires insurers to offer a mature-driver discount to operators aged 55 and older, but the statute does not fix the percentage. Each carrier sets its own amount and files it with the state. Most apply the discount only when you submit proof of course completion from a state-approved provider.
Fla. Stat. §627.0652
What Florida Law Actually Requires
Florida law mandates that insurers offer a mature-driver discount to drivers aged 55 and older. The statute does not specify a percentage. Carriers file their own discount amounts with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, and those amounts vary widely. One carrier may offer 5%, another 15%, and a third may tier the discount by course type or renewal history.
The discount is not age-based in the sense that turning 55 does not automatically trigger it. The discount is course-based. You must complete a state-approved defensive driving or accident prevention course, submit the certificate to your carrier, and request that the discount be applied. If you do not submit proof, the carrier will not apply it. If the course provider is not on the state-approved list, the certificate does not qualify.
The certificate typically expires after three years. When it expires, the discount stops. Most carriers do not send a reminder. You must re-enroll in an approved course, complete it, and submit the new certificate to continue receiving the discount. If you miss the expiration window, you pay the higher rate until you submit new proof.
The blocker is procedural: Florida guarantees the offer but not the amount, and carriers apply it only when you submit proof from an approved provider and ask for it by name.
How to Verify Your Course Qualifies

Before enrolling, confirm the course provider is on the DHSMV-approved list. The list is published on the DHSMV website under traffic school and defensive driving programs. Approved providers include AAA, AARP, National Safety Council, and several online platforms. If the provider is not on the list, the certificate will not satisfy the statutory requirement and your carrier will reject it.
After completing the course, request a certificate of completion that includes your name, date of birth, course completion date, and the provider's DHSMV approval number. Submit the certificate to your carrier within 30 days of completion. Call your agent or customer service line and ask them to apply the mature-driver discount to your policy. Verify at your next renewal that the discount appears on your declarations page. If it does not, call again and ask why.
What Happens When the Certificate Expires
Most Florida carriers honor the mature-driver discount for three years from the course completion date. When the certificate expires, the discount stops. The carrier is not required to notify you that the discount has lapsed. You will see the premium increase at renewal, often with no explanation on the declarations page.
To maintain the discount, re-enroll in a state-approved course before the expiration date. Complete the course and submit the new certificate at least 30 days before your renewal date. If you miss the window, the discount will not appear on the renewal notice. You can submit the certificate after renewal, but the discount will not apply retroactively to the current term. You will pay the higher rate until the next renewal cycle.
Some carriers allow you to submit the certificate mid-term and apply the discount on a pro-rated basis. Ask your carrier whether mid-term discount application is available. If it is not, you will wait until the next renewal to see the savings, even if you submit the certificate the day after renewal.

How to Compare Carriers on Discount Amount
When you request quotes, ask each carrier two questions: what is your mature-driver discount percentage for a driver aged 55 or older who has completed a state-approved course, and does the discount require re-enrollment every three years or does course completion remain valid indefinitely. The answers vary. One carrier may offer a 10% discount that renews automatically as long as you remain claim-free. Another may offer 15% but require you to re-submit proof every renewal cycle.
State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Nationwide, and Allstate all write in Florida and file mature-driver discount programs. The discount amount is not published on their websites. You must request a quote and ask the agent or online quote tool to apply the mature-driver discount and show the premium with and without it. The difference is the dollar value of the discount for your specific profile, vehicle, and coverage selections.
Request Quotes with the Discount Already Applied
When you request a quote online or by phone, tell the carrier you have completed a state-approved defensive driving course and want the mature-driver discount applied to the quote. If you do not mention it, the quote will reflect the higher rate. Many online quote tools include a checkbox for mature-driver course completion. Check it. If the tool does not ask, call the carrier and request that the discount be applied before the quote is finalized.
Compare the final premium across at least three carriers. The carrier with the lowest base rate may not offer the largest mature-driver discount. A carrier with a slightly higher base rate but a 15% mature-driver discount may produce a lower final premium than a carrier with a lower base rate and a 5% discount. The only way to know is to request quotes with the discount applied and compare the final monthly or annual premium side by side.
