Your Premium Increased and Nothing Changed

You opened your renewal notice and the premium jumped $40 per month. Same car, same address, no tickets, no claims. Your agent says age is a rating factor now. You want to know what discounts Louisiana law guarantees you and whether switching carriers makes sense at this stage.

Louisiana does not mandate a mature-driver discount. Insurers may offer one voluntarily, but the amount is set by each carrier's filed rates. Most seniors paying higher premiums never ask what their carrier's discount is or whether completing an approved course would change their rate. The gap is procedural: the discount exists, but you must request it and submit proof to get it applied.

Louisiana Bodily Injury Minimum Per Person

$15,000

Louisiana requires $15,000 bodily injury per person, $30,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. These minimums are the legal floor, but retirement-era assets exposed in an at-fault accident often justify higher liability limits.

What Louisiana Law Actually Requires

Louisiana law does not require insurers to offer a senior or mature-driver discount. Carriers may offer one voluntarily, but the amount is set by each insurer's filed rates and approved by the Louisiana Department of Insurance. There is no statutory percentage floor.

This means the discount you get depends entirely on which carrier you ask and whether you submit documentation proving you completed a state-approved defensive driving course. Some carriers offer an age-based discount starting at 55 or 60. Others offer a course-based discount regardless of age. Many offer both, but the amounts differ by carrier.

Most seniors assume the discount applies automatically at renewal. It does not. You must ask your carrier what their mature-driver discount is, confirm the course provider is on the state-approved list, complete the course, and submit the certificate to your agent. If you skip any of these steps, you keep paying the higher rate.

The blocker: Louisiana law does not guarantee the discount or fix the amount, so you cannot know what you will save until you ask each carrier and verify the course provider is approved.

How to Get the Discount Applied

The pathway forward has four procedural steps. Miss one and the discount never appears on your renewal.

First, call your current carrier and ask whether they offer a mature-driver discount, what the percentage is, and whether it is age-based or course-based. If course-based, ask for the list of state-approved providers. Do not assume the course your neighbor took qualifies. Louisiana maintains a list of approved defensive driving courses through the Office of Motor Vehicles, and only courses on that list trigger the discount. Enrollment in a non-approved course wastes your time and money.

Second, complete the course and obtain the certificate. Most approved courses are available online and take four to six hours. The certificate must show your name exactly as it appears on your policy, the course completion date, and the provider's approval number. Submit the certificate to your agent immediately after completion. Do not wait until renewal. Most carriers require the certificate on file at least 30 days before the renewal date to apply the discount to the next term.

Failure Modes Competing Pages Omit

The certificate expires. Most Louisiana carriers apply the mature-driver discount for three years from the course completion date, not indefinitely. If your certificate expires before your next renewal, the discount disappears and you must complete a new course to restore it. Your renewal notice will not tell you the certificate expired. You will see the premium increase and assume it is an age factor when it is actually a lapsed discount.

The agent never files the paperwork. You completed the course, submitted the certificate, and assumed the discount would appear at renewal. It did not. Call your carrier and confirm the certificate is on file and the discount is coded to your policy. If the agent lost the paperwork or never entered it, you have been paying the higher rate for months while qualifying for the discount.

You switched carriers mid-term and the new carrier does not honor the old certificate. Some carriers require you to complete their approved course list, not just any state-approved course. Ask the new carrier before you switch whether they will accept your existing certificate or whether you need to re-enroll.

Carriers Writing in Louisiana

25

At least 25 carriers write auto insurance in Louisiana, including standard, preferred, and non-standard tiers. Each sets its own mature-driver discount amount. Comparing carriers means comparing programs, eligibility, and structure, not prices you cannot verify until you quote.

Coverage Decisions at This Stage

You own a 2015 sedan with 110,000 miles, paid off three years ago. Your current policy carries $500 comprehensive and $1,000 collision deductibles. The combined premium for comp and collision is $65 per month. You want to know whether dropping full coverage makes sense now.

The vehicle's actual cash value is approximately $6,000 to $8,000. If you file a total-loss claim, the carrier pays the ACV minus your deductible. A $6,500 payout minus $1,000 deductible nets you $5,500. You have paid $780 per year for that coverage. The conventional threshold is: when annual comp and collision premiums exceed 10 percent of the vehicle's value, dropping full coverage becomes a judgment call about your own asset replacement capacity. At $780 per year on a $6,500 vehicle, you are at 12 percent. Many seniors at this stage drop collision and keep comprehensive to cover theft, weather, and animal strikes.

Compare Carriers That Handle Senior Profiles Well

Louisiana's voluntary discount structure means the amount you save depends entirely on which carrier you ask. State Farm, GEICO, and Progressive all write in Louisiana and offer mature-driver discounts, but the percentage and eligibility differ by carrier. State Farm typically offers both an age-based discount and a course-based discount. GEICO offers a defensive driver discount that applies regardless of age if you complete an approved course. Progressive offers a mature-driver discount starting at age 55.

Quote at least three carriers and ask each what their mature-driver discount is, whether it is age-based or course-based, and what documentation they require. Do not assume the discount your neighbor gets applies to your profile. Carrier underwriting treats mileage, vehicle age, and household composition differently. A senior driving 5,000 miles per year in a paid-off vehicle qualifies for low-mileage programs most working-age drivers do not. Ask each carrier whether they offer a low-mileage discount and what the annual mileage threshold is.

Get Quotes and Verify the Discount

Call your current carrier first and confirm what mature-driver discount they offer and whether your existing certificate is on file. If the discount is not coded to your policy, ask them to apply it retroactively to the date you submitted the certificate. Most carriers will issue a refund for the months you qualified but did not receive the discount.

Then quote at least two other carriers. Ask each whether they offer a mature-driver discount, what the percentage is, and whether they accept your existing course certificate or require their own approved provider. Compare the final quoted premium with the discount applied, not the base rate. The carrier with the lowest base rate may not be the lowest after discounts. Verify the course provider is on Louisiana's approved list before you enroll. Ask the carrier for the list or check with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles directly.
